A/Prof. James Lee offers a few options for hernia surgery.

A/Prof. James Lee is highly experienced in all types of General surgeries including hernia surgeries to mend a hernia.

What is a hernia?

A hernia occurs when an internal organ or internal body parts protrude through the wall of muscle tissue. Most hernias are located in the abdominal and groin area. This development can be due to weakened muscles, muscle strain, a heavy cough, or other body changes.

The symptoms of a hernia include:

  • A noticeable lump that can be pushed back in
  • Increased pain at the site of the lump
  • Pain while lifting
  • Swelling in the groin or scrotum
  • Increase in lump size over time
  • A sense of bowel obstruction

When is surgery required?

Hernias are uncomfortable, you might require a hernia procedure at the site of a hernia to fix the issue.

What types of hernia surgeries are there?

A/Prof. James Lee offers the these main types of hernia surgeries:

Open hernia repair

This procedure is done under general anesthesia therefore, you will not feel anything throughout the procedure. Open hernia repair involves an incision in the groin area at the site of the bulging intestine. A/Prof. Lee simply pushes the hernia back into the abdomen and strengthens the abdominal wall with stitches or mesh.

Most patients are able to go home the day after the surgery and feel back to normal within a week. However, strenuous activity should be avoided for six weeks following the surgery.

Laparoscopic (key hole) surgery

This procedure is done under general anesthesia therefore, you will not feel anything throughout the procedure. Key hole is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a mini telescope-like instrument inserted through a small incision.

A/Prof. Lee repairs the hernia from inside the abdomen with mesh, which covers the defect in the abdominal wall and strengthens the tissue. Then, the small incisions are closed with invisible stitches. Within a few weeks, the incision sites are barely visible

This surgery is beneficial as it involves a quick recovery time (within a few days) and only tiny incision scars.
