What does general surgery mean?

General surgery consists of a broad range of surgical procedures on soft tissues for patients ranging in a broad spectrum of diseases. It requires knowledge of the overall preoperative, operative, and postoperative process. Read on to learn more about how A/Prof James Lee can assist you with the following health issues with general surgery procedures.

Skin lesions

What is a skin lesion?

Skin lesions are abnormal parts of the skin that can include bumps, discolouration, sores, or ulcers. They can be removed for aesthetic reasons, if it is bothersome, or if it is cancerous.

Skin lesion treatment

A/Prof James Lee can remove skin lesions through a number of different techniques. A/Prof James Lee can determine what the best treatment is for you depending on your circumstances.

Biopsy

What is a biopsy?

A biopsy is a procedure in which a piece of tissue or a cell sample is removed from your body to be analysed in a lab. A/Prof James Lee may conduct a biopsy procedure if a patient is showing signs of a potential disease or health issue.

Carpal tunnel surgery

What is a carpal tunnel?

Carpal tunnel is the passageway in your hand made of bone and ligament that supports the median nerve. This nerve is what gives you sensation in your thumb and first three fingers. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the nerve has pressure on it causing numbness, tingling, pain, or weakness in the hand. This can be caused by a number of factors including inheritance, arthritis, or other medical conditions associated with carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome treatment

If you have undergone various non-surgical treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome that have been unsuccessful, you might be referred to A/Prof. James Lee for surgical intervention. In carpal tunnel surgery, the surgeon cuts the ligament surrounding the carpal tunnel to relieve pressure on the nerve and thus relieve the symptoms. The result of this procedure is to create more room for the median nerve to pass through.

Lipomas

What is a lipoma?

A lipoma is a slow growing lump of fatty tissue that develops beneath the skin. They are commonly found on the neck, shoulders, back, abdomen, arms, or thighs but can form on any part of the body. Lipomas are not cancerous and are harmless. They are able to be left untreated, but sometimes they might become bothersome and surgical removal may be required.

Lipoma surgery

Lipoma surgery is a fairly straightforward procedure which involves the surgeon making an incision at the sight of the lump, and removing it. Occasionally general anaesthetic is required and the procedure can take around 30 minutes to complete.

Sebaceous cyst treatment

What is a sebaceous cyst?

A sebaceous cyst, or skin cyst, is a common, noncancerous abnormality that can grow anywhere in the body and are filled with varying semi liquid or liquid material. They typically do not cause problems but depending on where they develop, they can become inflamed, infected, painful, or possibly burst.

Cyst removal

As cysts range in size and location, treatment will vary depending on the unique case. However, removal typically involves a simple quick procedure under local anaesthetic, in which an incision is made at the site, and the cyst is removed or drained.

Ingrown toenail treatment

Ingrown toenails are a common issue for people of all ages. Treatment methods vary, depending on the severity of the case as well as the individual needs of the patient. A/Prof James Lee will always tailor a treatment to you. For those who suffer with recurring ingrown toenails, surgery might be the best option.

The surgery involves removing the toenail or section of the toenail where the issue is, as well as ensuring that the skin surrounding can heal without becoming irritated. The procedure is quick and you can be walking immediately following the procedure and wearing shoes within 48 hours of the procedure.
